PHILOSOPHY - A SIMPLE LIFESTYLE
There is an old saying, 'If you need to lean upon something, what will you do if it is taken away from you?' This saying underlies a philosophy very important to all warriors.
A SIMPLE LIFESTYLE IS THE FOUNDATION OF AN EXTENDED YOUTH, AND A HEALTHY OLD AGE
The ninja enjoy a vastly extended youth, retaining the look and function of their twenties until the age of sixty. There are NO old ninja. Once a ninja reaches sixty, he still retains full function for at least another twenty years - that is to say, until the age of eighty. And a ninja lives to well over a hundred. The ninja do not suffer from heart disease, from cholesterol, from diabetes and kidney disease. What is the secret of such invincible good health? The secret is a complex training, COMBINED with simplicity in lifestyle...
THIS IS THE WAY OF THE FINEST WARRIORS
A warrior should adopt a lifestyle of simplicity. Above all, a simple diet is the mark of a warrior. Of course, the diet should be diverse and nutritious to support a warrior's training - but THAT is the purpose of eating, to support life and strength. The warrior should turn away from the concept of food and drink as a source of pleasure. This is not a directive, my students - you do not have to listen to it. But it is good advice for a person who wishes to retain good health all through his or her life, and who wishes to live a long life.
Extravagance and excess in food and drink is a perversion, and it ALWAYS has bad consequences. Avoid an excess of oils and spices, but even above this, avoid the concept of 'eating for pleasure'. DO NOT connect food with emotions, my warriors, or you will eat when you are sad or depressed. Eat because food is fuel, and you need fuel to keep your body going. This is the right mindset with which to approach food.
The same goes for alcohol, or energy drinks, or even artificially sweetened drinks. Alcohol is a brain poison. If taken in excess at any point in one's life, it causes mental problems like Alzheimer's and senility once one is past the age of sixty. Energy drinks can have aftereffects detrimental to mind and body. Artificially sweetened drinks cause a sugar high that causes diabetes. Avoid these things if you wish to live long and remain fit well into old age.
WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE BODY?
What is acceptable? Simply put, everything that is not highly processed. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits, rather than rendering fruits into juices. Eat naturally, for that is what your body was EVOLVED to do. Above all, do not eat for taste, eat because your body needs food to function. Correct the thinking of the mind, and 'right action' in diet will automatically follow.
